“surround yourself with people who take their work seriously, but not themselves” – by Andy Johnson

I’m a little selective when it comes to attending in-the-room events these days, there’s just so much to consider; location, travel arrangements, topic, guest speakers, costs, workload, family commitments – I’m sure there’s many more you would add to that mix yourself.

But I do really value events where I’m able to be face-to-face with people and network, listen to discussions and talks from experts within the same sector as me (and outside of it), get personalised stationery and sweets, enjoy a tasty lunch, learn loads and have fun, be part of an awards presentation and be in with a chance of winning prizes like t-shirts and hoodies, and… hang on, have you not been to the same events as I have?!

Okay, back up for a second; remember what I said about being selective with my event choices? Well, commsHERO for me is one of those I can boldly endorse, it offers all of what I describe above, and more.

Working in the non-for-profit sector I am incredibly mindful of where my organisation spends its money and would only put forward opportunities for my own personal development where I feel there is truly VAS (value added stuff) – I just made that up by the way – for either me and/ or my team. And with that, a day at a commsHERO really does feel that it ticks several boxes.

From personal experience, and I’ve been to two of these events, I have heard from an array of brilliant speakers – people who have truly inspired and challenged my thinking in equal measure. I have networked with people who I have formed online connections with for years but never had the opportunity to meet in real life. I have enjoyed lunch and taken part in activities with these newly formed connections, people who were only ever strangers to me before the day. But most importantly, I’ve come away from both days full of energy, ideas, and inspiration, things I can then take back into my workplace to share with my team and apply into my working day.

So, if you are going to carefully consider your next event, and you’re looking for something that offers a great mix of professional knowledge, fun and value for money, take on board these words from former American politician and diplomat, Colin Powell:

“Surround yourself with people who take their work seriously, but not themselves, those who work hard and play hard.”
