Feeling Seen, Valued… and a Bit Like a Unicorn – by Kiran Brach

I genuinely don’t have the words to explain just how much it means to have been shortlisted for the CommsUnicorn of the Year at the commsHERO Awards 2025 (but I’m obviously going to give it a go anyway!)

When I found out, I was completely over the moon. I felt a prickling feeling in my eyes, (no YOU’RE crying) I smiled so hard my cheeks hurt.  I found out 2 days before a (big) birthday and it was one hell of a present.

I honestly don’t think I’ve stopped grinning since. This nomination has left me feeling seen, valued, and recognised, and I didn’t realise how much I needed that until it happened.

Working in communications is something I pour my heart into every single day. Whether I’m creating content, engaging staff, or championing inclusion, I always try to bring energy, creativity, and a whole lot of heart to everything I do. To now be recognised for that, not just the output, but the passion and purpose behind it, feels unbelievably special.

Throughout my whole life I have felt, in many ways, that I wasn’t enough.  To receive a nomination for something I am so passionate about has made me wonder, you know what, maybe I am?  Maybe I am more than enough, maybe I am a unicorn.

What makes it even more magical is the category itself. The CommsUnicorn of the Year award is all about recognising those who bring joy, creativity, and a spark of positivity to their work and the people around them. To even be considered for that is an incredible honour.

This nomination has made me pause. It’s reminded me that what I do does matter. That all those little moments, the jokes that lift someone’s day, the inclusive content, the brave conversations, the creative ideas that seem a bit extra but somehow work — they count.

It’s a huge boost of confidence, and a huge boost of joy. I feel recognised not just as a comms professional, but as me. And that’s priceless.

The awards take place in October, and whatever happens on the night, I already feel like I’ve won.
