Adding ‘Mythical Creature’ to My CV – by Michaela Mok

When I found out I’d been shortlisted for the Comms Unicorn Award, I couldn’t help but laugh. Of course, it would be me who ends up nominated for something with such a wonderfully quirky name. But that self-deprecating chuckle quickly turned into a grin that stretched from ear to ear.

Recognition is powerful, more powerful than we sometimes realise. Being seen and valued by others is one of the best feelings you can experience in any line of work. For me, it comes second only to having a sense of purpose and that’s exactly what I find in internal communications.

Communication builds connection. It brings clarity, unity, and understanding. I’ve always seen internal communications as a form of storytelling and I often ask myself: how would the Brothers Grimm or Walt Disney tell this story? It might sound a little whimsical, but I’ve been chasing that creative high all year in my role as Designs & Communications Specialist. The company is my audience, and every message, every campaign, is my canvas.

Which brings me back to that award with the mythical mascot. Some say unicorns are real, others insist they’re just horses with good PR but that’s the magic of it, isn’t it? Whether my comms spark a laugh, a smile, or a conversation, I can go to sleep each night knowing I’ve made a difference.
